Great Sand Dunes

I recently spent some time in Santa Fe attending a workshop led by John Paul Caponigro. One of the places we visited was Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. We visited a handful of locations but it was here that I felt the most inspired. My focus was in trying to capture the change that was happening to the landscape. The wind would come and pick up layers of sand and carry it across the landscape. It was like an uprising of sand.

I believe the tallest dune was 750 feet tall. I was determined to get to the top. I made it about 3 quarters of the way there. It seemed like the higher I got the windier it was and the less inspiring it became. I decided that I was okay with not having made it to the top.

The Great Sand Dunes was reminiscent of White Sands in a lot of ways, but it was also very different. The dunes were very similar in shape and the wind traced out similar patterns. But the characteristics of the sand were very different; the color, texture, and height.

I am inspired to reconnect with my White Sands project and I also plan on visiting the Great Sands Dunes again.

Residue

Residue is a collection that explores an idea that places and things have an

energy that can be recorded. I am intrigued by the idea that nature can leave

traces that can be captured in a photograph. This idea was inspired during a

photography workshop that took place at White Sands in November 2010. Over

the course of the four day workshop I had to develop a theme, I went into the first

day of shooting not knowing what I wanted to focus on. My thinking was that

there was nothing at White Sands I hadn’t already seen. After all, I have lived

in Alamogordo for twenty-five years. I was sure that I wasn’t going to capture

any images that haven’t already been done by someone else. Once I let go of my

preconceptions I realized my theme on the first morning. I came across this

leaf that the wind had blown across the sand; it appeared to leave footprints

behind. This little leaf inspired me to explore this idea further, that’s when I started

to really see the residue that nature has left behind. By the end of the workshop I

left behind my misconceptions of how I saw White Sands, and what I thought

photography was

White Sands Balloon Invitational

This year the annual invitational took place September 17 - September 18, 2011. I went out on the morning of the 17th to photograph, this was my first time going. I was lucky enough to get my first hot air balloon ride in the Sky Candy balloon. Sky Candy is from Rio Rancho , New Mexico it is a Lindstrand model 90A, and is 90,000 cubic feet. It is piloted by Randy and Diana Myklebust. On the morning that I was there most of the balloons flew tethered because of the winds.

Ribbon Cutting

Today was the official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for Rachel Telles Photography, LLC, Hot Pink Perspective, and Naturally Balanced. The Chamber of Commerce came out as well as family and friends. It was a good day. A big thank you to Leona from AIT Productions for filming.
